Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

CFD is a powerful engineering tool that can be used to investigate complex fluid flow problems for various equipment like Heat Exchangers, Reactors, Pressure Vessels etc. Various fluid related phenomenon can be visualized by coupling it with more complicated energy, chemical kinetics, multiphase, multispecies, particle dynamics and fluid-structure interaction phenomena.

Since early 2000, L&T Heavy Engineering have been developing and expanding their expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. L&T HEIC is well positioned to analyse a wide range of fluid flow regimes.

CFD studies can assist in the design stage to identify potential problems as well as resolve operational issues after the exchanger is in service. We also use CFD for existing product design improvement and troubleshooting. The main areas in which we utilize CFD are as follows:

  • Heat Exchanger performance
  • Two phase flow visualization to check potential hotspots, flow behaviour and flow regime
  • Potential fouling
  • Flow maldistribution and excessive pressure drop
  • Reactor Chemical Kinetics
  • Particle dynamics especially in separators
  • Flow Induced Vibration studies
  • Failure Root Cause Analysis
  • Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) studies
